Bad Egg

Surprise, surprise, Specialist Charles Graner is trying to pass the buck.

FORT HOOD, Texas — Army Spc. Charles Graner Jr., (search) the suspected ringleader of the Abu Ghraib (search) prison abuse, took the stand for the first time Saturday and said he was ordered by interrogators to physically mistreat and sexually humiliate prisoners.

Speaking a day after his conviction for the abuse, Graner described himself as a by-the-book prison guard who was corrupted by superiors.

He said he initially resisted pressure to mistreat prisoners, but his Army superiors made it clear to him that he was expected to obey the commands of the military and civilian intelligence agents who ran his part of Abu Ghraib.

This is, of course, absolute rubbish. Specialist Graner is a military policeman? That means he's been trained in the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit the kind of ninth grade football team hazing he was the ring leader of.

His seniors ordered him to do it? If that's true, then following that order was illegal, and he's still liable. Certainly, some of his seniors might be liable as well, but even if they are, that doesn't get him off the hook. Nice try.

My guess is that he and his crew of miscreants are just a bunch of bad eggs, and I'm glad to see them get what's coming to them.
