Suspended

Yeah, Kofi Annan's really cracking down.

UNITED NATIONS — Secretary-General Kofi Annan suspended the head of the U.N. oil-for-food program in Iraq and a senior official who dealt with contracts, following an independent investigation that accused them of misconduct, a spokesman said Monday.

Benon Sevan, who was in charge of the $64 billion humanitarian program, and Joseph Stephanides, who heads the U.N. Security Council Affairs Division, were told Friday that they had been suspended with pay, spokesman Fred Eckhard said. (Emphasis added.)

"Right then, you stole a bunch of money from the Iraqi people, perverted a system that was meant to help them, and were at the head of the biggest corruption scandal in modern history. While we investigate, why don't you go ahead and take a holiday? We'll keep paying you while you're gone, just don't go to Iraq, okay? They're acting out."

This is absolutely pathetic. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic. Kofi Annan should be ashamed of himself. It's stories like this that cause Americans to call for Annan's resignation, or an American withdrawal from the U.N.
