My Disagreement With April
I know that many of you enjoy the back-and-forth between myself, The Fly, and April, The April. Er... Anyway. April and I are like-minded on many things, but there are some issues that we strongly disagree on. One of those is Christmas.
I hate Christmas. I hate it. Do I hate gifts? Of course not. Do I hate family? Well, some of them are frustrating, but a lot of them are worth seeing once or twice a year. Do I hate tradition? Of course not, I have a degree in history. So what do I hate?
Well, I'll tell you. Everyone looks at various aspects of the Christmas tradition, and tries to relate them to Christianity and the birth of Christ. Everyone also knows that I'm a devout Christian, and a great deal of my historical research has been pointed at the ancient church. This research has demonstrated to me that, like Easter, Christmas is a "Christian" redress of an old pagan festival celebrating the Winter Solstice. Its origins have nothing to do with Christian traditions, and there is only a one in three-hundred sixty-five chance that "Christmas" is even the day on which Jesus was born. Ridiculous!

So, finally, after twenty-three years, I plan to escape Christmas this year, and avoid celebrating it, no matter whether I'm still in the area or not.
Go ahead. Tell me I'm a fundamentalist lunatic. Disagree with me. I double dog dare you!
Seriously, though, I'm curious what you folks think, and I'll entertain any legitimate arguments. Post 'em, folks.
