Election Thursday: Obama and Carter
A few news stories, a couple of Election Thursday items, and that's it for today.
In an outstanding display of unity, discipline, and dedication, a French diplomat in Afghanistan has leaked portions of the British ambassador's communique` saying that the mission in Afghanistan is doomed, and it's basically all the U.S. military's fault. I'm not sure how this joker expects to defeat a well-organized, radical, Islamist militia that's being armed by Iran without the US military. The Brits, Canadians, and Danes (and maybe the Dutch?) are doing good work in the Taliban areas, but they're under-funded and under-resourced due to years of military budget cuts throughout Europe. We've seen similar partisan reports as this one here in the United States from folks in both the State Department and the intelligence community, and they're troubling because they're very seldom based on much hard evidence. That doesn't stop news outlets like the Times from picking up on them. Very disappointing.
The former Premier of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, is forming a reformist political party in Russia. Let's hope that he has better luck than the chess guy has.
Okay, a couple of light election items, and that's it for today. First off, there's this dude named James Kotecki who runs a YouTube channel called Emergency Cheese. A while ago, he got picked up as a commentator for Politico.com, which I'm guessing is about politics or something. At any rate, one of his videos makes a tongue-in-cheek comparison of Barack Obama to Jimmy Carter. Have a look.
As playful as the comparison may be, he's actually completely right. People are trying to compare Senator Obama to then-Senator Kennedy (Jack, not Ted), but the truth is that his policies are a much closer mirror to the failed policies of Jimmy Carter, American history's most worthless chief executive. President Carter's failures haunt us today, as his administration planted the seeds of our current energy crisis, our current financial crisis, and the whole "radical jihad" thing (see Iran and Afghanistan, circa 1979). At any rate, those who compare Obama to Kennedy forget two things: Kennedy had far more experience (to include much more time in Congress than Senator Obama, plus military service - how novel!), and he still barely won the election. Plus, if then-Vice President Nixon had demanded an investigation into voter fraud, Nixon probably would have been president a decade earlier due to the rampant voter fraud that led to Kennedy's narrow victory.
At any rate, the other item is a goofy rerun from the 2004 election: Votergasm.com. The entire premise is that people ought to engage in amorous behavior before, during, and after they vote. I'm sold. Go check it out. A certain sister should feel right at home there.
Tune in tomorrow, folks. Aside from any news that's worth posting, I'll have a very special announcement about the weekend. Have a great day!
