Little Green Czechs

Following up on this post about the Lithuanian nuclear shutdown, the AFP reports that there are problems with the Czech nuclear station.

The troubled Soviet-designed nuclear power station at Temelin was again partly out of action Sunday as a result of a cooling failure in a secondary generator, spokesman Milan Nebesar said.

He said the mishap did not involve any nuclear aspects of the 1,000-megawatt reactor, one of two on the site, which went on line in 2000 following safety upgrades by the US Westinghouse corporation.

The breakdown followed two leaks of radioactive water from the block's cooling system last year, the latest only three weeks ago.

You've got to hand it to those Soviet nuclear engineers. It all reminds me of an episode of The Simpsons...

Mr. Burns: Homer, your bravery and quick thinking have turned a potential Chernobyl into a mere Three Mile Island. Bravo!
