Starship Down

UPN has announced that "Star Trek: Enterprise" will air its final episode in May.

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- For the first in 18 years, prime-time U.S. network television will be without a starship crew to "boldly go where no man has gone before."

"Star Trek: Enterprise," the latest incarnation of one of the most storied franchises in televised science-fiction history, will end its four-season run in May, broadcaster UPN said Wednesday.

UPN said the last original episode would air Friday, May 13, and its departure marks the first time in 18 years that the "Star Trek" franchise has been absent from prime-time network television.

I have to admit, I'm pretty bummed about this. I'd been trying lately to make an effort to watch the show on Friday nights. There are two major objections I had to the series: it was far too preachy, and it took gross liberties with the "history" of "Star Trek." Gentle reader, you would be amazed at how picky some of those nerds out there can be. As evidence, I present Exhibit A. "Star Trek" has a cult following, and when the writers take excessive liberties with story continuity, nerds get their shorts in a twist, and they stop being so supportive.

Now, "Star Trek" has always been a rather preachy show; television's first interracial kiss was on "Star Trek" (Captain Kirk; go figure), and each of the following series' has dealt with social and political issues. "Enterprise" took it a lot further than it needed to go, I thought. For one thing, you had an entire season that served as a commentary on the Global War on Terror. The series had a lot of possibilites; it was a lot more plausible than the train wreck that was "Forager"... Excuse me, "Voyager", but those possibilities were poorly exploited by the writing staff.

UPN and the "Star Trek" franchise in general will be losing a lot of money every year by not having a series in prime time; basically, this whole development can be blamed on the writing staff. If it were up to me, I'd fire the writing staff, bring in some new folks, and change the direction of the show... But nobody asked me.
