Fear and Loathing in Jakarta

This one's pretty cute.

Indonesian Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono has flown to Washington for talks with US officials aimed at lifting a ban on military ties.
Mr Sudarsono told reporters before he left that he was planning to meet US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

He said he was tasked with explaining Indonesia's "developments in promoting democracy".

The US ended military ties following the 1999 violence in East Timor.

Efforts to restore links were compromised by the killing of two American teachers in the Indonesian province of Papua in 2002. Human rights groups allege the military was involved.

Last month, the US State Department announced it had lifted restrictions on Indonesia's participation in a US military training programme.

But a ban on weapons sales and on direct military support to Indonesia remains in place.

If Indonesia's so intent on having this ban lifted, they might want to reconsider this decision.

The money shot?

Jakarta, the world's most populous Muslim nation, will want to play on its new found role as a key player in Washington's so-called war on terror. (Emphasis added)

So now the international war on terrorism is only "so-called"? Thanks for the vote of confidence, BBC! What a bunch of twits.
