Old Reliable France
This is so entertaining.
I believe I've said before that when I was in Paris last September, a strike would have prevented me from going up to the top of the Eiffel Tower (which was the source of what little money the French got from me) had I been only one day earlier. According to my French "family", the unions will strike for any reason, at the drop of a hat. That reason is sometimes as simple as wanting to extend an existing holiday.
I adore the French people I know, but as a people, there's only one thing from the French that you can rely on: unreliability (unless it's in their best interest).
France is in the grip of a one-day general strike, just as Paris hosts a team of inspectors from the International Olympic Committee.
They will tour the city to assess its bid to host the 2012 Olympics.
The strike has brought much of the public transport system to a halt, while tens of thousands of protesters are due to stage rallies.
All the main French trade unions are taking part in the stoppage to protest against government economic reforms.
