The Fly on Terry Schiavo
Ugh. Okay, I wasn't going to post anything until I got to school on account of having a ton of work to do, and on account of my blazing fast dialup connection (yes, that was sarcasm), but I want to post this before it disappears from Fox News' frontpage.
Terry Schiavo's parents are trying to get a judge to grant a divorce. Now, this is probably going to surprise some people, because it goes against the general trends of conservatives, but I think that Terry Shiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, need to let her go. Schiavo's parents issue statements about Terry's husband, Michael Schiavo, complaining that "It has become quite obvious that his priorities are not in Terri's best interest."
How is it in a person's "best interest" to keep them alive artificially? I realize that there's some difference between Ms. Schiavo and someone on a ventilator, but not much. Ms. Schiavo is so severely brain damaged that she's pretty much a vegetable. According to the accounts of all but her family, there is basically no hope for rehabilitation.
It may sound calloused, but I think that it's high time Bob and Mary Schindler acknowledged that their daughter is gone, and allow the rest of her to go. This is not a case of euthenasia in my mind; this is a case of expending both private and public funds to artificially prolong the natural "life" of a woman who has been essentially dead since 1995. Apparently, this is even against the wishes of Terry Schiavo, who her husband says did not want to be kept alive artificially.
Mr. and Mrs. Schindler, if you're reading this: let Terry go.
