Mourning a Legend
Today America lost a hero.
My dad was friends with Chris LeDoux. They met playing golf back in the early 1990's, and had kept in contact ever since. Dad's friends with all the guys in the band, and they even handed him a tambourine and put him on stage a few times over the past few years. I had the chance to meet him during the Summer of 2002, after his liver transplant, but before he developed the bile duct cancer. He was as much a class act as you'd ever hope to meet.
If you ask me, country music has gone down the tubes since it got big in the early '90's... Except for Chris LeDoux. He was about the only real cowboy I know of who played music. When he made it big, he didn't buy a mansion or go to Hollywood or Nashville; he bought a ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming.
You could have put Chris LeDoux's picture next to the word "American" in the dictionary. He was tough, independent, soft-spoken, and genuine. He was also a hard worker, and as much of a man as you'll ever find. He loved his wife, and he took care of his family.
Chris LeDoux was an American hero. The nation is richer for his example, and weaker by his loss.
