Intolerant Tolerants
Today was some sort of Mexican holiday. Yes, I know what it is, but did you know that it's to celebrate Mexico's independence from the French, not from the Spanish?
Anyway, the Mexican kids pissed away student funds by giving out free food. I, of course, circumvented the whole thing, but a friend of mine said hello to me from the line for free food, so I went to speak with him. I mentioned my confusion at the fact that people celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but not Bastille Day or other foreign holidays. Two or three people behind my friend Keith was some liberal hooligan chick, who broke into our conversation, which went something like this:
Fly: So I don't understand this. Why do people celebrate this, but not Bastille Day, or other foreign holidays? It makes no sense to me.
Hippy Hag: Because there's not a large French population here!
Fly: Ahhh, but people have been celebrating Cinco de Mayo since before there was a large hispanic population here. *turning back to Keith* But you, you're only here for free food.
Hippy Hag: *interrupts again, babbling something*
Fly: Hey, I'm not even talking to you, I'm talking to my friend, why do you keep interrupting?
Hippy Hag: Because I'm trying to correct your ignorance on the subject.
Fly: How is it ignorance? I'm just making a point!
Hippy Hag: *more liberal whining*
Of course, if I'd really been on my game, I would have noted that yes, there is a substantial segment of the American population who derive from French, and more specifically Western European, ethnic stock; far more than derive from hispanic stock. We've celebrated Saint Patrick's Day for years, but if there were a bunch of Irish students who wanted to establish the Irish Students Association, and get a "cultural center" (read: exclusively Irish house sponsored by tax and tuition dollars on campus), they'd be denounced publically by university officials and every racist "minority" group on campus.
So, let's recap. Illegal Mexican immigrants failing to adopt American culture and using my tax and student fee monies to promote Mexican Independence Day in the quad = a completely acceptable and legitimate use of university funds. Any group of ethnic Europeans, descendents of legal immigrants, trying to get matching university funds to celebrate European holidays (even, *gasp*, religious holidays!) = evil white hegemonic imperialistic oppressors who should be denounced.
Dig? Once again, the tolerance crowd are the first people to interrupt you and call you ignorant without actually giving it any thought whatsoever.
