Evaluating Allies

Now, people grouse a lot about the American relationship with Saudi Arabia. Some people grouse about the American relationships with China, or Russia, or whatever. Is Indonesia any different? They gave a convicted terrorist leader less than a decade in prison for inciting two devastating terror attacks on their own soil. By way of comparison, we executed Timothy McVeigh for only one terrorist attack.
I'm all for establishing a strong relationship with legitimate allies. I'd like to see the Indonesian government give us more to work with if we're going to normalize ties with them. I realize that this is another example of the "baby steps" program, the same thing we're encouraging with the Saudis, and I can handle that.
It's just frustrating to me that this Indonesian bureaucrat is trying to make it look like we're one big hapy international community, when his own government essentially sold all of their Western allies, and particularly the Australians, up the river already this year. I've already pointed out that the Indonesian government sentenced Schapelle Corby, who was accused of smuggling cannabis into Indonesia, to more than twice as much time in prison as the aforementioned terrorist leader.
If Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia, is reading this: you can't have it both ways.
