The Peace Dividend

Isn't this story interesting?

Israel's parliament has approved the deployment of 750 Egyptian troops along the Egypt-Gaza border following Israel's pull-out from the territory.

Egyptians will patrol a 14km (eight-mile) stretch along the border, which is
controlled by the Israelis.

Under the agreement, Egypt will be in charge of preventing weapons smuggling and "terrorist infiltration".

Israel last week completed the evacuation of its settlements in Gaza and parts of the West Bank.

Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz told MPs the deployment of lightly armed Egyptian officers along the Philadelphi buffer zone would "pose no threat to Israel".

"The agreement commits Egypt to combating arms smuggling and terrorist infiltrations and opens the way to future security co-operation between our two countries," he said.

Egypt has everything to gain by maintaining normal, civil relations with the Israelis. It would be nice if countries like Syria and Lebanon realized that, and started reining in the terrorists they're either sponsoring or just turning a blind eye to.
