When Life Throws Lemons
I've had another crippling defeat dealt to me where I should have had a brilliant victory. Those of you who follow my Stuff Fly Wants list know that I've had my eyes on The Sword and the Shield by Christopher Andrew and Vasili Mitrokhin. Before going to see Serenity, I finally stopped in to Borders and bought a copy. On my way out, I ran into Young Nathan, who was buying horn concertos by Mozart; he assures me that he has a copy of The Joshua Tree so I'll forgive him.
As we were leaving, I ran into a good friend of mine from my days as a college radio disc jockey, and gave her a big hug; well, the hug was a bit too big, because the book dropped from my hand, resulting in a massive crease in the back cover. Perhaps the majority of folks reading this don't realize the degree of bibliophilia that I suffer from/rejoice in: whenever I loan a book, I give specific, repeated instructions not to crease the spine. Sure, my books aren't all in mint condition... But I try my best. There's no use crying over spilt milk or creased book covers, but for a book I've wanted for about four years to be "chipped" within ten minutes of its purchase is beyond cruel and unusual.
