Island Thunder

It looks like the Super Castro Brothers are getting angry in their old age.

Cuba pressed on Tuesday with its biggest military exercises in almost 20 years, with 400,000 reservists joining regular forces and millions of civilians in wargames which the authorities say are to deter a US invasion.

About 100,000 Cuban regular troops are also taking part in the "Bastion 2004" exercises which started Monday, officials said.

"The enemy will never catch us by surprise," the official communist party daily, Granma, trumpeted Tuesday in its coverage of the wargames which proceeded as ailing President Castro welcomed Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, his only close ally in the Americas, whose government helps keep Cuba's energy-starved economy afloat with cut-rate oil.

Just for the record, the Cuban military is falling apart. They've got no submarines, no appreciable anti-submarine capability, a handful of operable aircraft operated by pilots who barely receive enough training to be proficient in their operation. This is a big joke.

"In the end, (the aggressor) will have to withdraw, bloodied and defeated, because this would be a war of all of the people," Castro, a younger brother of President Fidel Castro, warned.

Let me remind everyone that all of those loyal revolutionary Cubans keep trying to escape. First there were the guys who used a truck-boat and then a 1950's Buick car-boat. Then, more recently, all forty-three members of a Cuban theatre troupe defected.

El Presidente is getting older by the day. A month or so ago he had that nasty fall, live on television. In my professional opinion, Communism in Cuba will last as long as he does. The U.S. government isn't posturing to invade Cuba; as Richard Boucher says in both the first article and this alternative one, Cuban military exercises are just a desperate attempt to distract the people from the ills of Communism that are keeping them down. We beat the Russians without firing a shot, and we'll outlast Cuba.

Also, I think that those Cuban guys with the truck and the Buick should be offered refuge in the U.S. and put to work on the AAAV and the V-22 Osprey. Particularly the Osprey.
