Ban It All

What do Europeans do when they dislike something? They ban it!

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The European Union may consider banning Nazi symbols in its 25 member nations after Britain's Prince Harry wore a swastika armband to a costume party, the bloc's top justice official said Monday.

Franco Frattini, the EU's justice and home affairs commissioner, said he was open to discussing the issue at a Jan. 27 meeting of EU justice ministers.

"It may be worth looking into the possibility of a total ban, a Europe-wide ban," his spokesman, Friso Roscam Abbing, told reporters Monday. "Commissioner Frattini shares the general feeling of opprobrium on the use of the swastika and other Nazi symbols."

Now, there are several issues worth addressing here. First, this is an outright suppression of free speech. I think that neo-Nazis, wannabe-Nazis, and anyone who identifies with their racist, ignorant political and philosophical platforms are idiots. I think the same about the flat-earthers, any number of religious cults, members of the Green Party, et cetera. Still, free speech, and the right to demonstrate or express yourself however you wish should be an inalienable right. Any effort to ban Nazi symbols should be considered outrageous by the citizens of the European Union.

Second, this is most obviously a Socialist band-aid solution. Instead of promoting racial and religious tolerance, instead of doing something to encourage interracial cohesion in society, they seek to ban the "symbols" of racism. I have news for you, folks; Prince Harry wearing a swastika to a costume party isn't the cause of racism in Europe. Racists are the cause of racism in Europe.
