BBC: The Spin Starts Here
Today the BBC reports that Italy is withdrawing troops from Iraq. In September. Of course, the BBC doesn't mention that in the headline; by posting as little as they possibly can, the BBC can imply to the casual leader that Italian troops will be withdrawn in response to that "attempted journalist assassination" a couple of weeks ago.
The same thing happened a couple of weeks ago. They announced that Ukraine had announced a time table for withdrawal from Iraq. Now, I'll be the first to admit that part of Viktor Yushchenko's platform was withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Iraq.
The thing you have to keep in mind, gentle reader, is that these nations have always been expected to get out of Iraq before the United States. This is not some big development; it's the planned progression of a gradual exit strategy.
But are BBC News reporters intelligent enough to figure that out? Experts say "No."
