Magna Graecia
The BBC has an article about an exhibit in Italy chronicling the limited Greek influence in that nation. (If you claim on my blog that the Romans just stole their culture from the Greeks, I will debate the issue with you, and you will lose, so don't try me.) It's the usual rubbish appraisal by the media of anything remotely academic. There's this one money shot...
Of course, BBC correspondant David Willey likely meant this partially as a dig at America, which Europeans still consider to be a colony of upstarts and whippersnappers despite the fact the United States is older than most European nations. It's interesting to note, though, that in both the cases of Magna Graecia and the United States, the colony ended up being notably superior to the original nation.
Food for thought, at least. Have a look at the article if you're at all interested in ancient history.
