The Teacher: An Update

I've had several regular readers ask me what my current FlyCon status is. Since it's been repeatedly pointed out to me that such a classification is "lame" and makes me a "nerd", I've decided to, for all intents and purposes, discontinue use of the system. However, I know that many of you are curious as to the details thus far, so this is an update.

On Thursday I went out to see my friend's mother, who is the teacher who happened to be at a meeting with...

Okay, I guess I need to start assigning names. Well, I suppose the best thing to do is assign the same sort of moniker that our good friend Lycan uses, and call her The Teacher.

Anyway, on Wednesday my friend's mother happened to be at the same table as The Teacher at their little teacher's conference thing, and The Teacher and one of her colleagues mentioned that some guy had helped her carry something in, and according to my friend's mom, she said that she "was flattered". My friend's mother mentioned that she knew me, and that I was a really nice guy, and it was after this that The Teacher's availability came up in the conversation. (In case you didn't catch that part, she confirmed that she wasn't dating anyone after I was interjected into the conversation.) My friend's mother informed me of this early that afternoon; it all would have ended with carrying in the tub if not for her proactive attitude.

I attempted to engineer an opportunity to talk to her for the next two days, consulting with my friend's mother as to the further details of the original conversation on Thursday evening; I almost had my chance on Friday morning, when she arrived once again with her sister in the same silver car I'd seen Wednesday morning. Just before I was going to go over there and introduce myself, a guy got out of the car, and I balked. I stood at my car, doing something or other, and watched as they waited for a tiny black thing... A dog, to explore a bit. Before they went in, The Teacher waved at me, and I waved back. I was back in the game; and, for what it's worth, the sister and the guy walked out a while later holding hands, once again confirming that The Teacher was/is single.

I sort of kept an eye out for the rest of the day, but the car I'd seen her arrive in turned out to be her sister's, and it didn't show up. When I got home from work on Friday, at about 20:30 or so, I was surprised to see a vehicle parked across the street. It stayed there for several hours, and finally there was some movement. I looked out to find, to my great surprise, that there were three individuals on the front entryway of the school... And a tiny black dog. It was her. Though I'd been getting ready for bed, I threw on cargo shorts, a sweater, and flip flops, and hard charged over there. To my great surprise, they were headed back into her classroom; The Teacher, and her parents. She asked me if I wanted to come see the progress she'd made on the room, and I gladly accepted the invitation.

I wound up spending a couple of hours helping her and her parents to decorate her classroom. Outstanding. I didn't get much of a vibe from her, but we spent some time alone together, which was nice, and I found out a few things. The most important, of course, was that she knew Rampage, Mrs. Rampage, and Rajer. This was huge. Also, as she and I were working on the display wall outside her classroom, I mentioned that I might have to run back home for a minute to lock the house. She said that I didn't have to stay, and I said that I'd been waiting to talk to her for two days. Her reply? "You could have just come in the building." I also found out that the family has Wyoming connections, just like I do. The Teacher seemed shockeda t that.

We all left the classroom well after midnight, and I asked if it would be okay if I stopped by the next day. She said it would be, and I was stoked.

I had to make a run up to Metropolis on Saturday, so I was up early. I tried Rampage and Mrs. Rampage, but neither of them answered their phones. I then tried Rajer, who informed me that The Teacher is extremely nice, dated Rampage, and she thought I should absolutely ask her out. While I was on the road, I finally got a hold of Rampage, only to find out that he and The Teacher dated for three months during our collective senior year of high school, and they only broke up so that he could start dating the young lady who is now Mrs. Rampage. Rampage and his wife confirmed that not only is The Teacher an absolute sweetheart, but also fairly conservative; she also apparently, has her act completely together, which I've found to be a valuable trait in a female counterpart. Basically, everyone I know who knows her is telling me to go for it.

Once I was back in town, on my way home, I stopped in to see her, but only stayed a few minutes, and didn't go back yesterday, mainly because the whole situation of being there with both her and her parents was getting a bit awkward, and because it looked as if most of the work that they had left was organizational work that couldn't be accomplished by anyone but her. My current plan is to back off for a few days, and see if she'd be interested in joining me for a jaunt around campus over in College City next weekend. My plan is to go on a photographic expedition around campus on Saturday, and since she's staying in College City with her sister, it would save her a trip. Also, it has the virtue of being something I'd already planned to do.

So, that's the status. I'm in a holding pattern, trying to iron out my thoughts on the matter. Any comments or input is welcome, particularly if anyone has a better idea for a first date. I'll keep y'all posted. Right now, I'm basically trying to be indifferent about the whole thing; I feel like there are some positive indicators, but she's also just starting a new job, my life's in a state of flux. I'd love to be hopeful, but you play the cards you're dealt, and right now, I don't have the kind of hand I'd need to give me an absolute confidence about winning the pot.
