Thursday International Review

India and France have signed a deal for the construction of Franco-Spanish Scorpene class conventional submarines. The French submarines will be constructed in Mumbai as part of the "transfer of technology" program between France and India. From what I hear, French submarines are fairly capable, unlike the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. There is no word yet on whether or not the Indian government will employ the revolutionary French innovation of replacing torpedo tubes with facilities for the rapid deployment of French countermeasures.

Iran's president and top nuclear negotiator have issued a statement rejecting negotiations about its nuclear program. Have a look at this:

"We do not reject negotiations, but we will not accept negotiations that are aimed at depriving Iran of its rights."

I wonder if Ahmedinejad voted against the nuclear program, before he voted in favor of it. If you ask me, it's becoming clearer and clearer that this situation will not be settled without "aggressive negotiations" at the Bushehr and Esfahan facilities.

Israel has issued a writ of "bullshit" on the use of "Palestinian" human shields in arrest raids.

China is reporting a trebled trade surplus.

The figures are likely to further annoy the US, which has long argued that China's exports are unfairly helped by a deliberately undervalued yuan.

Beijing agrees the surplus is too high, but says the yuan is only one factor.

On this one, I can agree with the Chinese: the deliberately undervalued yuan is only one way in which they're practicing international economic impropriety.

And finally, Eritrea has ordered the grounding of all U.N. aircraft. (BBC Link.) The U.N. is whining about it, saying that it's crucial for them to use these aircraft to resupply their "peacekeepers" (and we all know how morally upstanding the typical non-American U.N. peacekeeper is). Unfortunately, neither of the articles seems to give any indication as to why the Eritrean government issued the ban; I'd have to have that information before I could form an opinion on the matter.
