Hypocritical Politics

The search for illegal weapons in Iraq is over.

WASHINGTON — The search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq has quietly concluded without any evidence of the banned weapons that President Bush cited as justification for going to war, the White House said Wednesday.

Democrats said Bush owes the country an explanation of why he was so wrong.

In that case, Democrats make a good point. I think that President Bush should explain. Oh wait, he has, in David Kay's report, and the Charles Duelfer report, which say that Iraq was trying to reconstitute their weapons programs, using United Nations Oil-for-Food revenues to do it, subverting the sanctions, and so on. So, if Democrats want President Bush to provide an explanation, they must also want President Clinton to retroactively explain why he made the exact same charges against Iraq in the leadup to Operation Desert Fox, right?

*crickets chirping*

Ahhhh, okay, so it's just a massive double standard, in the same way that President Clinton's five percent unemployment rate was good, but President Bush's five percent unemployment rate was bad, and President Clinton's economy topping ten thousand was good, but President Bush's economy topping ten thousand wasn't worth reporting. Hmmmm. And the money shot?

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California said Bush should explain what happened.

"Now that the search is finished, President Bush needs to explain to the American people why he was so wrong, for so long, about the reasons for war," she said.

"After a war that has consumed nearly two years and millions of dollars, and a war that has cost thousands of lives, no weapons of mass destruction have been found, nor has any evidence been uncovered that such weapons were moved to another country," Pelosi said in a written statement. "Not only was there not an imminent threat to the United States, the threat described in such alarmist tones by President Bush and the most senior members of his administration did not exist at all."

That's why Saddam Hussein was hosting Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, sponsoring and hosting Hamas and other terrorist groups, robbing Americans and the rest of the world of their money through the Oil-for-Food program, and basically not living up to any of his international agreements, right? Right? RIGHT!?!

UPDATE: Comments like most of these are why I take the opinions of those critical of American foreign policy with a gigantic grain of salt.
