Important Elections

Junichiro Koizumi, the Japanese Prime Minister who had the balls to send Japanese troops to assist in Iraq, is poised for a strong victory in the upcoming election.

There are accusations of electoral chicanery in Egypt. I can't say for sure, but my guess is that the accusations are probably baseless. Hosni Mubarak is making a push to sidle up to the West and become a legitimate democracy, because that's the way politics is moving in the Middle East. It's moved that way in the "Palestinian" territories, it's moved that way in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and even Saudi Arabia. It's a baby steps situation, of course, but I'm under the impression that this election is transparent enough, and being monitored by international authorities. Mubarak, despite some of the elements of his agenda, is one of our best moderate allies in the War on Terror. I'm not a big fan of his, but his reelection provides some stability, and that's what we need; not another Islamist regime.

And I know we're all still praying fervently that Angela Merkel will hand Gerhard Schroeder's ass to him, and send him back to Mossenberg with his tail between his legs. Given that the German economy is as bad now as it was right after World War II, that women can be denied unemployment benefits if they refuse to "work" as prostitutes, and that Schroeder's collaborative effort with Jacques Chirac on the E.U. Constitution went down in flames, it's time for him to go.
