TDG #2 Reloaded
Okay, let's try this again. Just for kicks, since I know that several of the previous participants are in transit right now, you've got forty-eight hours to get this done. My solution will be posted by 20:00 PST on Wednesday; your solutions are due by then. Don't let the hostages catch you off guard; take note of their locations relative to the sentries. Good luck.
You are a platoon commander assigned to the Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), embarked aboard the lead ship of an amphibious ready group. Your unit is participating in Joint Exercise Northern Dawn, a war game conducted in conjunction with the British Ministry of Defense in the remote island group known as Orkney. Orkney is several miles off the northern-most point of Scotland. Several units are tasked with taking over the ferry terminals at John O'Groats and Scrabster on the mainland.
Your platoon has been tasked with a hostage rescue scenario at a farm house near Dounby, on in the northwest quadrant of the main island. You have an attached sniper team (one shooter, one spotter), and an anti-armor team (SMAW). Intelligence indicates that the farm house is guarded by a squad, estimated at seven personnel, of Royal Marines Commandos, with a company-sized garrison based in Dounby, a five minute drive away. There are two additional garrisons within twenty minutes' driving distance of the farm house. The British units operate the SA80 family of weapons, though Royal Marines have been known to employ the M-16 with attached M203 grenade launcher. Intel has been unable to determine whether or not the squad at the house is employing the L86 LSW, comparable to the M249 SAW employed in Marine units but using smaller caliber ammunition.
You will not need to worry about artillery or mortars. A heliborne insertion will be noticed if conducted within four miles of the farm house (for scale, count the garrison at Dounby as being two miles away). A beach insertion will be detected if conducted within seven miles of one of the patrol stations. Several elements of JEX Northern Dawn are being carried out during your window; radio intercepts from OpFor (opposing forces) indicate that detection will not necessarily lead to a tip-off to the guard post at the farm house, but would likely result in increased alertness throughout the area of operations.
Weather forecasts indicate during the duration of your window to carry out the mission, so your platoon will be wearing Gore-Tex jackets, over-trousers, and wool sweaters. Save for a few scattered trees, the entire island is covered in grass, with no natural cover; for various reasons this operation will be conducted at night. Terrain is rolling hills, and the approach to the front of the farm house is uphill. The property is surrounded by a chest-high wall made of stacked shale that can not be easily (or quietly) scaled.
A floor plan of the two-story farm house has been provided, and is marked with the expected positions of the squad and the volunteer "hostages". Orkney has been inhabited since before the beginning of recorded history, and is the home of a number of archaeological and historic sites that must not be damaged, so your battalion commander has given specific instructions to avoid contact with these sites.
What now, Lieutenant?
With a time limit of twenty-four hours, give me an action plan. I want insertion method, location, and route to objective. I want unit deployment scheme for three squads, one sniper team, and one SMAW team, and a rough plan for the farm house operation. I want a withdrawal route and plan. Questions can be directed to me by E-Mail or in the comments to this post.
Bonus question: Tell me what ancient author was the first to write about Orkney, and what the name of his literary work was.
