Checking in on Libya - and Mormon Klingons!

Hey folks! I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. Mine was quite productive, as I've mentioned previously. There's work yet to do, but I hope to have things completely squared away within the week.

Today's news review is going to focus on Libya, as there have been a number of news stories lately out of the former North African/Middle Eastern pariah state. A couple of weeks ago, Crazy Uncle Muammar basically pledged to privatize most of Libya's operations and distribute oil windfall money to the citizens of Libya - not exactly in keeping with the Economic Basis of the Third Universal Theory, but any improvement is welcome. The Libyans and the Italians also signed an agreement recently, in which the Italian government will invest $5bn over the course of the next twenty years. The biggest news, however, is that Secretary Rice has visited Libya and met with Colonel Qaddhafi (CNN, BBC); very good news, because it ushers in a new era in cooperation between Libya and the rest of the world. The BBC has an article about modernization in Libya, but it's really not very good - a few interesting points, but mostly just BBC whining about the United States. How the BBC can use an article about Libya to whine about the United States, I don't know, but they still seem to attempt to pull it off.

Okay, a few non-news items. For your daily satellite image, there's Camp Yarmouk (or the Yarmouk Camp?) outside Tripoli - not sure whether this is some sort of "Palestinian" camp from back in the day when the PLO had bases in Libya, but whatever. I'm just stoked that I recognized the Arabic word for "camp".

Are you a die-hard geek who's also interested in Mormonism? It's almost hard to believe - almost - but someone has actually translated passages from the Book of Mormon into Klingon (h/t Free Will). If you're in the mood for some more substantial reading, in English, consider checking out The Soviet War in Afghanistan: History and Harbinger of Future War from the FMSO. Are you in the mood for comedy? If you are, today's comedic selection is the transcript of an old Kids in the Hall sketch: Christ Wasn't a Very Good Carpenter.

Check back tomorrow, and in the mean time, heed the words of Disc Golf Champ: "Dollar Tree is like the Target of the dollar stores." And in case you were wondering, that's a compliment.
