The Fly's Productive Sunday

As I write this, we're just about to enter the 09:00 hour, and I've already had an unexpectedly productive Sunday morning. Having gone to bed at around 21:30 last night, I'd set my alarm for 06:15 - a solid night's sleep, with plenty of time to get some laundry and some online shopping done this morning. I was awake around 06:00, just waiting for the alarm to go off, when my phone rang - I didn't realize that it was just ringing until I actually looked at the screen and saw that it was a phone call.

I'm not sure that I've mentioned them, but there's an adorable couple whom I attend church with. For the sake of the blog, we'll call them Master Sergeant and Madame Belle. Master Sergeant served as in the Army Air Corps in North Africa during World War II, where he met Madame Belle. She was Corsican, but born and raised in Morocco, a French protectorate at the time of the war. They eventually married, and are now in their eighties. A few months ago, they happened to move about a block away, so they're about five minutes' walk from my door.

So, at 06:07, I got a call from Madame Belle. Master Sergeant doesn't move around very well anymore, he walks slowly with a cane, and he occasionally falls and hurts himself. He'd done that this morning, apparently around 03:00. Madame Belle is one of the most gracious and unassuming people I've ever met, so she refused to call anyone to help her get up until at least 06:00, even though Master Sergeant was in some pain. She couldn't get him up, he couldn't get himself up, so she did what she could to make him comfortable (as he was apparently telling her to call someone to help - a little bit unnerving to hear about, but not my place to opine), and called a few minutes after 06:00. I quickly put on some clothes and went over there to help him up, got him into his recliner so that he'd be comfortable and somewhat upright if anyone needed to come move him, and then stayed as Madame Belle made me breakfast and tea - not that I needed breakfast and tea at what was now 06:30, but that's just the way she operates, and I've learned not to get in her way when she has that hospitable Corsican mind set on doing something.

So, I sat with the two of them, which was delightful despite the circumstances of my visit, and then I walked back to my place. I need to get ready for church in a few minutes, as I'm ushering today, but before I started blogging, I did most of that online shopping that I'd spoken of in last night's post. Here's what I got:

  • Hot for Words 2009 calendar ($18.90 with shipping, on discount since the year's already started) and Gina Elise's Pin-Ups for Vets 2009 calendar ($22.00)
  • Chuck Buy More polo shirt and two Nerd Herd lanyards (one for me and one for the Crypto King) ($54.95 with shipping)
  • Ranger Up My Carbon Footprint T-shirt ($21.80 with shipping, on discount since I had a coupon code)

Given that I'd just paid $117.65, and $153.96 a few days ago, and seeing as how that adds up to $271.61, and seeing as how I have some other things to take care of in the next week or two, I decided to forego the Sangean ANT-60 Shortwave Antenna at $17.95, given that I wouldn't actually be able to use it until February anyway and I'd rather wait until I was ordering something along with it in order to qualify for Amazon's Super Saver (read: free) shipping. The fact that I've spent this much money in a week, plus another expenditure that will be discussed later, is absolutely mind-boggling to me. On the plus side, I can expect surprises to show up via US Postal Service and UPS for the next week or so! Score!

Alright, the Fly desperately needs to get ready for church. Stay tuned, because with all of this productivity top-loaded in my day, you can expect an awesome blog post (including toys fighting one another) tomorrow morning. Have a great Sunday, folks!
