Jackass Uninterruptus

Oh good, Pat Robertson has more to say.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a “terrific danger” to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on “The 700 Club” it was the United States’ duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a “launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism.”

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

And, in a related story...

Seriously, though, Pat Robertson is an absolute jackass. Why do I say this? Well, there are several reasons.

For one thing, addressing this story, it's completely asinine for a Christian preacher, particularly a holier-than-thou one of Robertson's stature, to be advocating assassinations. It's one thing for a conservative minister to support capital punishment after a fair and public trial by a criminal's peers. It's quite another for that same person, who claims to represent the values of Christ, to propose assassination. Did Moses assassinate Rameses? No. Did Paul assassinate Nero? No. No matter what Robertson may think of himself, he (for better or for worse, mostly worse) represents American Christians, not the U.S. Government. This outburst is completely unacceptable.

The second reason that I have an extreme loathing for Pat Robertson comes from an interview I saw of him on Fox News regarding his bread and butter, the thing he's spent his life studying, the area of his extensive expertise... Islam? The moment of most extreme outrage came when he claimed that the terrorists want to impose a strict Islamic law, which they call "Allah". Gee, Pat, call me crazy, but the last time I checked it was called Sharia. In fact, isn't "Allah" the Arabic word for "God"? Who's the intellectual powerhouse at Fox who chose Pat Robertson for that interview segment? Honestly!

Mr. Robertson, if you're reading this, take my advice: shut up and retire already. You may be rallying your base, but you're pissing me off. Stop trying to represent American Christians with your asinine little ideas, and let people with real expertise worry about Hugo Chavez and the War on Terror.
