Going Crazy
Two things are driving me nuts today, one more than the other. Allow me to explain.
The minor issue stems from an incident that happened many moons ago, when a girl I was seeing decided to ditch me for another guy. I won't go into detail, but they've since broken up, and today I saw some pictures of the two of them together. I'd only seen one or two pictures of the guy before, and the more pictures I saw of him, the more I wondered what she'd ever seen in him. I'd always thought he looked and sounded like a total loser, and my opinion is just reiterated by each and every picture I saw of him. My own long-dead relationship with this person aside, it's shocking to me that she would have wasted her time with such a tool.
So, what's the major issue? Now, you're all going to laugh at me, but I swear, I screamed about twelve F-bombs into my hands when I found this out: both "traveling/traveled" and "travelling/travelled" are correct spellings. That, my friends, drives me absolutely crazy. To make things worse, the one with two L's is listed as "chiefly British". You all know that I'm an Anglophile (despite the fact that I don't use the extraneous U's in words like color and odor), so this is going to be really, really tough. Most people don't care about how language is used, but that's not how the Fly rolls. Ugh, I just can't believe this. I hate it when I learn that I've been spelling a word wrong, or inconsistently. I hate it.
In the mean time, I've identified a desire to learn at least three four more alphabets, even if I don't learn the languages along with them: Phoenician, Hebrew, Japanese Hiragana, and Cyrillic. I already know, of course, the Latin alphabet that you're reading right now, and the Arabic alphabet. Knowledge of several alphabets is helpful for its utility in encryption. This, of course, is in addition to all of the other projects I'm either engaged in or planning at the moment.
Also of note on the linguistic front, many of you will remember that I've been studying Arabic for about two and a half years now. Last week I purchased an Arabic Bible. My game plan for that is to use my existing Bible (I use the NIV) as an English guide, and then build my vocabulary and my understanding of grammar, syntax, and conjugation accordingly. This should be excellent practice not only for continuing to learn Arabic, but also for learning more languages in the future. I've wanted to learn Latin for years, and this experience could help me to eventually turn that dream into a reality. Imagine if you will, folks, a friendly neighborhood Super Fly with a functional grasp of English, Arabic, and Latin, with further basic skills in German, French, and possibly Japanese. Wouldn't that be amazing?
In the mean time, though, I'll have to flip a coin every time I conjugate the word "travel"...
