Skellig Pirate Energy

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Monday. I'm pretty excited about this particular week. Let's start off with some news.

The first two stories involve Somali piracy(!) on the 'igh seas! Arrrrr! The US Navy is going to lead an international force to focus the fight against piracy, particularly in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia (AP, CNN, Guardian, BBC). Also, remember that Saudi supertanker that the pirates hijacked a couple of months ago? It's finally been released (BBC, Guardian).

In energy news, a group of politicians and scientists are whining over an International Energy Agency report that claims that wind power isn't as realistic a solution as fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Perish the thought. Meanwhile, due to the collapse of the oil bubble and other factors, Venezuela's 2009 looks so troubled that they're suspending free oil for the handful of their citizens who can actually use it.

There were several ridiculous or even hilarious items from the end of last week. The Iranian government has denounced the BBC's new Persian channel - they tend to like denouncing everything. President-Elect Obama is going to star in Spider-Man comic - there's just no way of getting away from this guy, is there? And in the United Kingdom, a compulsive trash hoarder has died of dehydration after becoming lost in his own trash maze - Mighty Mo just lost any desire she may have ever had to go to England.

Today's video is War and Pieces part 1, starring the Stikfas

We'll cover the conclusion tomorrow. Today's satellite image is Skellig Michael, an island mentioned in the opening pages of How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill.

That should cover today. Check back tomorrow for more.
